ADDITIONAL NOTES:
While recording the sixth tape of our series our beloved Tascam 246 (we used for the previous 5 tapes) suddenly stopped working, leaving us, after days of recordings and the EP nearly completed, again at the starting point. You can't playback (and record in your DAW) a tape recorded on a 4 track recorder from a standard cassette deck and have the "song" you recorded there.
1st: speed is different, 4 track recorders basically record at higher speed than a standard cassette deck/walkman.
2nd: 4 track recorders record two tracks on one side of the tape, two tracks on the other side (this was a technical desing decision we are not going to discuss here). You use just one side of the tape when using a 4 track recorder... so if you playback your tape on a standard deck and you listen to side A you have 2 tracks lowered in pitch and speed, if you listen to side B you have the other 2 tracks, lowered in pitch and speed, playing backwards. To the equation we must add a lot of noise, maybe coming from the tracks on the other side of the tape, well, at the end, this equation is not bad at all. And so we did, we listened some of our old recordings, we produced for the series using our Tascam, on our standard tape deck. We discovered with delight an incredible scenario of alien and noisy soundscapes. Tracks #2 and #3 was born cutting and sequencing some of this material on Protools. Track #1 was recorded into Protools and then bounced on our cassette deck to get "that sonic congruency". Well the tape compression, if you push really hard a chrome cassette, really makes it thicker. Anyway we hope to get the problem on the 246 fixed, we have a lost, almost complete tape to release and other tapes we'd love to record using that terrific piece of gear.
